Today, everything seems to be at your fingertips. With just a few clicks, you can test layouts, play with colors and place furniture without even moving a finger. Thanks to interior design apps, giving your living room a makeover or redesigning your kitchen has never seemed so simple.
But is that really enough? Can you design a harmonious, functional interior on your own without a professional? I've tested several of these tools to see just how far they can take us... and where the interior designer remains indispensable.
The appeal of DIY: when tech gives us the power to change everything.
The dream: reinvent your interior without lifting a hammer. Thanks to modeling applications, you can now create a floor plan, add furniture and test colors in no time at all. Some even offer realistic 3D renderings to give you a better idea of what's in store.
And let's face it: it's pretty exhilarating.
With Planner 5D, I was able to set up a fictitious apartment in just a few minutes. I tested different types of flooring, enlarged windows and added a central island to a kitchen. The experience is fluid, playful, almost addictive.
With MagicPlan, I simply scanned a room with my phone to get an accurate 2D floor plan. Handy for finding out if that dream sofa really does fit in your living room without having to measure every nook and cranny.
In just a few clicks, I had a new, redesigned, optimized space. And frankly, on paper, it was pretty convincing.
The limits of apps: when reality reigns supreme
Then... there's real life.
Where these tools quickly show their limits is when it comes to going beyond theory. Because yes, imagining an atmosphere is all very well. But how do you actually set it up? Where do the water inlets run? What is the technical feasibility?
Here's a concrete example: on Room Planner, I placed a glass roof right in the middle of a load-bearing wall. A small beginner's mistake that an architect would have spotted immediately.
Another concern is that these apps often offer generic furniture and materials. It's impossible to integrate real brand or supplier references. The risk? You end up with a beautiful virtual image, but you can't find what you're looking for in-store.
Not to mention technical constraints. Natural light, volume circulation, acoustics... these are all parameters that an app can't analyze for you.
This is the art of "better living", where each room becomes a personalized bubble, ready to welcome you with a dose of well-being!
Why is an interior designer still essential?
At this point, I asked myself: can a private individual really do everything on his own?
The answer: yes, but only up to a point.
If your project is limited to choosing a pretty sofa and testing a few paint colors, these tools may suffice. But when it comes to a more complex redesign, calling in a professional can save you time, money and efficiency.
Why?
An expert's eye: A successful interior is more than just a pretty picture. An interior designer works on proportions, materials and functionality. He knows how to play with space to make it more fluid, brighter and more balanced.
A network of qualified craftsmen: Laying herringbone parquet, installing a custom-made island or moving a partition can't be improvised. A good architect has reliable, competent and honest professionals in his address book.
Optimized budget management: Paradoxically, using a professional can save you money. By anticipating mistakes, selecting the right materials and negotiating with suppliers, an architect can avoid unnecessary costs and unpleasant surprises.
The verdict: what are these apps really worth?
Let's be frank: these tools are an excellent way to start thinking about a project. They allow you to project yourself, to imagine atmospheres and to have a first basis before taking action.
But they're no substitute for the expertise of an interior designer. Because interior design isn't just about putting together beautiful images. It's about thinking through every detail of a space, from structure to lighting.
My advice?
Have fun with these apps, test them out, explore them.
But before embarking on a real project, seek professional advice.
